MFA Program Schedule

Term Dates

Term 1: September 3 - October 26

Term 2: October 26 - December 21 (Closed for Thanksgiving Holiday November 28-December 1)

Term 3:  January 6 - February 29

Term 4: March 2 - April 25 (Closed April 12th for Easter Sunday,

Term 5: April 27- June 20 (Closed for the Memorial DAy WEEKEND HOLIDAY MAY 23-25)

Term 6: July 13 - August 17 (Competitive Program Only)

Term dates are subject to minor changes due to competitions, snow days, holidays etc.

Our programs run in 8 week terms, classes are on going ( if you are not able to join at the start of a term, you may join at anytime and the fee will be pro-rated from where you begin). Everyone learns the sport at a different pace. Our coaches observe and dedicate resources to each fencer according to their needs.


Youth Beginner Program

This program is designed for kids between the ages 7-12 with no prior fencing experience. It lays the foundational knowledge, physical and technical skills for fencing. Students are given a study guide of skills which will be covered and assessed each week. Upon completion of their skills, they will be invited to continue in the Youth Intermediate Program. Students may join at any time and progress at their own pace.

Long athletic pants, athletic shoes and shirt must be worn; shorts or shoes with holes are not permitted.

 

Class frequency per week:  1x, 2x  or unlimited

Staff: Master Michael Marx, Master Jonathan Barth, Lisa Marx and Carlos Bruno and assistants

Day/Time: Monday - Friday 4:15pm-5:25pm, Saturday/Sunday 10:00am-11:00am

Equipment requirements: Full set required (mask, jacket, chest protector, underarm protector and glove.) Students can rent all equipment at a fee of $50 for the term.

Tuition per Term: $280 1X, $480 2X or $580 unlimited. Level I Membership required.


Youth Intermediate Program

The Youth Intermediate program caters to fencers between the ages 8-14 who have completed the assessment of foundational skills in the Youth program. Athletes will try their hand at foil and epee in a more challenging environment. Students are given a study guide of skills which will be covered and assessed each week. Upon completion of their skills, they will be invited to continue in the Competitive Beginner Program. Students may join at any time and progress at their own pace. After one term at this level, students must own their own equipment.

 

Class frequency per week: 2X or unlimited

Day/Time: Monday - Friday 4:15pm-5:25pm, Saturday/Sunday 10:00am -11:00am 

Equipment requirements: Full set required. Students can rent all equipment at a fee of $50.00 for the term.

Tuition per Term: $550 2X, $695 unlimited. Level I membership required.


Competitive Beginner Program FOIL/EPEE

New for Fall 2019 - Competitive Beginner

The Competitive beginner program (new for the 2019/20 Season) is designed for those fencers who have passed the Youth Intermediate program and now need to practice those skills with their peers under the supervision of the MFA coaching staff. As the athletes practice together the coaches will take the students aside as needed to work on any technical or tactical skill that requires attention. At this stage, students would have been sorted to specialize in either the foil or epee and our encouraged to begin competing in local competitions appropriate for their age and level. Students at this level must own all fencing equipment and be attired appropriately for each class.

Class frequency per week: up to 3X a week.

Equipment requirements: Full personal set required.

Tuition per Term: $650 - Level II membership required.


Competitive Intermediate Program FOIL/EPEE

New for Fall 2019 - formerly the pre competitive program

The Competitive Intermediate Program follows a specific formula to develop the necessary skills to compete at the regional level and earn a national ranking. The formula is designed to allow each student to go at their own pace. Upon completion, the athlete is invited into the Competitive Advance Program. Athletes must own all their own equipment and be attired appropriately for each class.

 

Class frequency per week: up to 4X per week

Day/Time:

Foil Monday 5:30pm-7:00pm, Wednesday 5:30pm-7:00pm, Saturday/Sunday 11:00am-12:30pm

Epee Tuesday 5:30pm-7:00pm, Friday 5:30pm-7:00pm, Saturday/Sunday 11:00am-12:30pm

Equipment requirements: Full personal set required.

Tuition per Term: $625.00 2X, $750.00 (up to 4X ) - Competitive Level II Membership Required.


Competitive Advanced Program FOIL/EPEE

The Competitive Advanced Program is open to fencers who are rated and actively competing at regional and national events. Students in this program attend classes up to 4 times per week and receive private lessons. Goals at this level may include making a national team or competing for an NCAA college. As such, this program requires a year long commitment*. Athletes must own all their own equipment and be attired appropriately for each class.

Class frequency per week: up to 4X per week, plus private lessons. Individual lessons to be scheduled with the coaching staff.

Day/Time:

Foil Monday 5:30pm-7:30pm, Tuesday 7:00pm-9:00pm, Wednesday 7:00pm-9:00pm, Thursday 5:30pm-7:30pm.

Epee Monday 7:00pm-9:00pm, Thursday 7:30pm-9:00pm, Friday 7:00pm-9:00pm in addition SMALL GROUP lesson times are scheduled Monday - Thursday in the auxiliary portion of the gym. Comp A Girls Wednesday/Thursday 7:30pm-9:00pm, Comp B Girls Wednesday/Thursday 6:30pm-7:30pm. Comp A Boys Monday/Tuesday 7:30pm-9:00pm, Comp B Boys Tuesday 6:30pm-7:30pm, Wednesday 5:30pm-6:30pm. Coach to determine which small group lesson time each athlete will attend.

Adult Fencing Program

This program is developed for teen/adults with little or no experience in fencing or those who wish to pick it up again after an absence from the sport, as well as those who wish to prepare for competitions. Teens who are 14 years and older are welcome to join. Classes are held once a week on Saturdays for beginner to advanced students. Primary focus will be Epee.

Beginning Students must wear long athletic pants, athletic shoes and shirts. Shorts or shoes with holes are not permitted. Full Equipment is required - beginning Students can rent all equipment at a fee of $50 for the term.

Class frequency per week: 1

Day/Time: Saturday 12:45pm-2:15pm

Equipment requirements: Full set required. Students can rent all equipment at a fee of $50.00 for the term.

Tuition per Term: $320 per term. Level I membership is required. Drop In Fee $45.00.



Private Lessons

Private lessons are automatically included for students in the Competitive program. However, they can be recommended and scheduled for a student to advance more quickly. Jr. Member fencers who are keen on taking private lessons will be assessed on a case by case basis. You must be a member (Jr.,Individual or Family) to take private lessons at MFA. 

If you're interested in a private lesson, please speak with the front office staff and they will assist you.

Duration: 20-30 minutes depending on age and level.

Cost: Between $30 to $85.00.


Open Bouting 

Experienced, non-member fencers are welcome to join our open bouting sessions. A simple floor fee will be charged for each session. Must be a current USFA member. Proper fencing Attire is Required.

 Day/Time: Monday-Friday 8:00pm-9:30pm

Cost: $20 (No fees for collegiate fencers)

 

Membership with USA Fencing

USFA Membership is compulsory for all, including beginners*.

All fencers (including guests, open bouting and foreign fencers taking private lessons) are required to hold membership in competitive, professional or non-competitive capacity. Membership fees start from $10 per annum for the non-competitive category.

*Non-Competitive membership is included in the Level I Membership for the Youth and Beginning Adult Fencers.

Membership with Marx Fencing Academy

Membership is required for all fencers.

Annual Membership Fees and Membership Level

Level I Membership (Youth and Youth Intermediate) $150.00 includes:

  • First Term Rental Bag (all rentals after first term $50)

  • Non-Competitive USA Fencing membership

  • End of Term In-House Tournament

  • Option to take Private Lessons

  • Priority access to Summer Camps

Level II Membership $400.00 (Competitive Beginner/Intermediate) includes and are entitled to:

  • Club Patch

  • Open bouting

  • Option to take Private Lessons

  • Priority access to all Marx Fencing Academy Intensive Trainings, clinics and weekend training sessions

  • Represent Marx Fencing Academy at all tournaments and compete on MFA Teams

  • Receive strip coaching at Local, Regional, National events

Level III Membership Individual $600.00 Family $800.00 (Competitive Advanced) includes and are entitled to:

  • Club Patch

  • Open Bouting

  • Access to Priority Private Lesson times

  • Priority access to all Marx Fencing Academy camps, clinics and weekend training sessions

  • Represent Marx Fencing Academy at all tournaments and compete on Marx Fencing Academy Teams

  • Receive strip coaching at Local, Regional, National and International tournaments

Athlete Program Registration

All athletes of Marx Fencing Academy are required to register their information with us for purposes of safety and communication. The profiles gathered will further enable our coaches to disseminate tailored information about, as well as recommendations of upcoming competitions to parents and fencers.

Please note that this database is one part of the class registration - it lets us know that you will be taking the class and includes the necessary waivers and athlete information to process your payment and class choice. Class fees to be paid in person or over the phone. We accept all major credit cards, checks and cash.
