Fall Programs starting Sept 2018

Fence for Fun

Who doesn't want to be a Jedi or Musketeer? This program is designed for students ages 6-8. Fencing with a whole lot of fun and games. Masks and plastic swords will be provided.

Class frequency per week: 1

Day/Time: Saturday, 9:00am to 10:00am

Equipment requirements: None; equipment will be provided

Cost: $280 per term. 


Youth Beginner Program

This program is designed for kids between the ages 8-14 who are with no prior fencing experience. It lays the foundational knowledge, physical and technical skills for fencing. Students are given a study guide of skills which will be covered and assessed each week. Upon completion of their skills, they will be invited to continue in the Youth Intermediate Program. Students may join at any time and progress at their own pace.

Long athletic pants, athletic shoes and shirt must be worn; shorts or shoes with holes are not permitted.

 

Class frequency per week:  1x, 2x  or unlimited

Day/Time: Monday - Friday 4:15pm-5:25pm, Saturday 10:00am-11:00am

Equipment requirements: Full set required (mask, jacket, chest protector, underarm protector and glove.) Students can rent all equipment at a fee of $50 for the term.

Cost: $280, $480 or $580 unlimited* Jr. Club Membership required.


Youth Intermediate

The Youth Intermediate program caters to fencers between the ages 8-15 who have completed the assessment of foundational skills in the Youth program. Athletes will try their hand at foil and epee in a more challenging environment. Students are given a study guide of skills which will be covered and assessed each week. Upon completion of their skills, they will be invited to continue in the Pre-Competitive Program. Students may join at any time and progress at their own pace. After one term, students must own their own equipment and become Jr. members of MFA.

 

Class frequency per week: 2X or unlimited

Day/Time: Monday - Friday 4:15pm-5:25pm, Saturday 10:00am -11:00pm 

Equipment requirements: Full set required. Students can rent all equipment at a fee of $50.00 for the term.

Cost: $550, $650 unlimited. Jr Club membership required.


Pre-Competitive (Foil and Epee)

New for Fall 2018 - Pre Competitive Level 1 and 2.

The Pre-Competitive program is designed for experienced fencers who would like to further their skills with a goal to compete at the local and regional level. At this stage, students would have been sorted to specialize in either the foil or epee. Expect to compete in local competitions appropriate for their level. 

Level 1- option for the fencer who has moved into the Pre Competitive Program from Youth Intermediate and has the basic fundamentals to begin competing.

Level 2 - Designed for the Pre Competitive students who have prior competition experience and are proficient at situational drilling. Please note that this option is available to all pre comp students with coaches approval.

Students at this level must own all fencing equipment and be attired appropriately for each class.

 

Class frequency per week: 

Level 1 2x per week - Suggested times for Foil (Thursday & Saturday) Epee (Tuesday & Saturday)

Level 2 up to 4x per week. * classes are combined with the Competitive Program.

Day/Time: 

Foil Monday 5:30pm-7:00pm*, Thursday 5:30pm-6:40pm, Friday 5:30pm-7:00pm and Saturday 11:00am-12:30pm

Epee Tuesday 5:30pm-6:40pm, Wednesday 5:30-7:00*, Friday 5:30pm-7:00pm and Saturday 11:00am-12:30pm

Equipment requirements: Full personal set required including weapons and electrical gear.

Cost:

Level 1  $480 per term, plus annual membership fee.

Level 2  $620 per term, plus annual membership fee. 


Competitive Program (Foil and Epee)

The Competitive Program is only open to fencers who are rated and actively competing at regional and national events. Students in this program attend classes up to 4 times per week and receive private lessons. Goals at this level may include making a national team or competing for an NCAA college. As such, this program requires a year long commitment. Athletes at this level must own all fencing equipment and be attired appropriately for each class.

 

Class frequency per week: up to 4X per week, plus private lessons. Individual lessons to be scheduled 

Day/Time:

Foil Monday 5:30pm-7:30pm, Tuesday 6:45pm-9:00pm, Wednesday 7:00pm-9:00pm, Thursday 5:30pm-7:30pm.

Epee Monday 7:00pm-9:00pm, Wednesday 5:30pm-7:30pm, Thursday 7:00pm-9:00pm, Friday 7:00pm-9:00pm.

Equipment requirements: Full personal set required.


Teen/Adult Program

This program is designed for adults with little or no experience in fencing, as well as those who want to continue recreationally. Teens who are 14 years and above are welcome to join. Classes are held once a week on Wednesdays.

Students must wear long athletic pants, athletic shoes and shirts. Shorts or shoes with holes are not permitted.

You may bring your own equipment or rent from the club.

Day/Time: Wednesday 8:00pm-9:00pm

Equipment requirements: Full set required. Students can rent all equipment at a fee of $50.00 for the term.

Cost: $280 per term. Jr. membership required.


Private Lessons

Private lessons are automatically included for students in the Competitive program. However, they can be recommended and scheduled for a student to advance more quickly. Jr. Member fencers who are keen on taking private lessons will be assessed on a case by case basis. You must be a member (Jr.,Individual or Family) to take private lessons at MFA. 

If you're interested in a private lesson, you should talk to a coach, and have it arranged through the front desk.

 

Duration: 20-25 minutes

Cost: Between $30 to $75.


Open Bouting 

Experienced, non-member fencers are welcome to join our open bouting sessions. A simple floor fee will be charged for each session.

 

Day/Time: Monday-Friday 8:00pm-9:30pm, Saturday 12:30pm-2:00pm.

Cost: $20

Term Dates for Season 2018/2019

Term 1: September 4 – October 27

Term 2: October 29 – December 22

Term 3:  January 2 – February 23

Term 4: Feb 25 – April 20

Term 5: April 22 – June 15 (No classes on Saturday May 25 or Memorial Day May 27 )

Term 6: June 17- August 24 (Competitive Program only)

Term dates are subject to minor changes due to competitions, snow days, holidays etc.

Our programs run in 8 week terms, classes are on going ( if you are not able to join at the start of a term, you may join at anytime and the fee will be pro-rated from where you begin). Everyone learns the sport at a different pace. Our coaches observe and dedicate resources to each fencer according to their needs.

Membership with USA Fencing

USFA Membership is compulsory for all, including beginners*.

All fencers (including guests, open bouting and foreign fencers taking private lessons) are required to hold membership in competitive, professional or non-competitive capacity. Membership fees start from $10 per annum for the non-competitive category.

*Non-Competitive membership is included in the Jr. Membership for the Youth, Youth Intermediate and beginning Adult Fencers.

Membership with Marx Fencing Academy

Membership is required for fencers in all Competitive programs.

Members are entitled to:

  • Open bouting sessions

  • Option to take Private Lessons

  • Priority access to all Marx Fencing Academy camps, clinics and weekend training sessions

  • Represent Marx Fencing Academy at all tournaments and compete on MFA Teams

  • Receive strip coaching at Local, Regional, National and International tournaments

Jr. Membership includes:

  • First Term Rental Bag (all rentals after first term $50)

  • Non-Competitive USFA membership

  • End of Term In-House Tournament

  • Option to take Private Lessons

  • Priority access to Summer Camps

  • Open Bouting Teen/Adult

 

COST

Jr. Membership: $125 per annum (Youth and Youth Competitive Members)

Individuals: $400 per annum (Pre Competitive/Competitive)

Family: (regardless of family size): $600 per annum

Athlete Program Registration

All athletes of Marx Fencing Academy are required to register their information with us for purposes of safety and communication. The profiles gathered will further enable our coaches to disseminate tailored information about, as well as recommendations of upcoming competitions to parents and fencers.

Please note that this database is one part of the class registration- it lets us know that you will be taking the class and includes the necessary waivers and athlete information to process your payment and class choice. Class fees to be paid in person or over the phone. We accept all major credit cards, checks and cash.
